October always means Dead Moon Night in our world. This month, there are a few more things afoot….

Special thanks to the Camden International Film Festival for hosting the premiere of Mississippi’s first film, WINDOWS OF TIME last week. The film tells the story of Brother Theotis Taylor through 50 years of footage shot by his prodigal son (and our co-director), Hubert Theotis Taylor. The sold-out screening was extremely emotional, not in the least cause Hubert has been trying to get this footage out there for decades. Not a dry eye in the house. A small restock from our warehouse of one of our most beloved releases: a compilation of our favorite Arvo Pärt pieces! All sparse and beautiful arrangements. Some solo piano pieces, some duets with piano, violin cello and viola and one string quartet. The pieces on this record are all unique to the style of Arvo Pärt - deceptively simple compositions that force you to live in the moment you are listening to them. This record comes in a beautiful "tip on" old school cover with shiny gold ink and features an incredible painting from the 16th century manuscript Kometenbuch.

It was a great honor to welcome The Space Lady to the East Coast for her first shows on this side of the continent in many years.

It all started with an invite from Making Time ∞ in Philly. The Space Lady agreed to make the trip there because she had always wanted to go birding in Western PA. We added a show at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn as well as a very special community garden show in Manhattan. For two days, we roamed NYC together. Here are some 35mm photos from her visit…

Before the show, TSL and her partner, Duane, wanted to visit the highest point in New York. We followed a topographic map across the Verazano Bridge to Todt Hill in Staten Island. We parked in front of a McMansion, skirted a fence, and entered this dreamy pocket of the city…

Then we went birding in Green-Wood Cemetery…

The next night 6BC Botanic Garden in the East Village hosted the Space Lady and Nina Ryser amidst the greenery. The music bounced off the buildings, as close as we’ll get to a roman amphitheater.

Mississippi Records will Present Sounds

This is our third Present Sounds event at the mighty L+SD and it’s quickly become one of our favorite places in the city. Figuring out the contours of the amazing sound system, and preparing some test pressings for their first public listen…

"Present Sounds" is your weekly deep listening escape, hosted in a private loft in Greenpoint. It boasts a vintage 4-point Klipschorn sound system and cozy seating arrangements, ensuring an intimate and immersive musical experience. The exact location will be shared with ticket holders in the confirmation email.

Dinner will be available for purchase ($10-15). Join us for sound, food, comfort, and joy.

To celebrate the release of the 10th and final compilation in the Cairo Records Soul Series, Far Cry will be playing the entire set! That's 23 records.....192 songs.....holy shit.

So, come on down and hear these songs as they were meant to be enjoyed - in a bar with a fancy drink and a friend nearby while they're played on an incredible hi-fi system.

We're getting ready to embark on this major tour of Europe soon with a new presentation!

It's the story of music resisting authoritarianism as told through anecdotes about heroes and villains including The Cramps, Jimmie Rodgers (The Yodeling Brakeman), Kipsigis Musicians, Sting, Scientologists, Ethiopian pop stars, Portland punks, Russian bootleggers, Spotify, Octopus, The Beatles, The Germs, African cowboys, Techno Fascists and much more. (Trust us. It all makes sense)

We'll bring it back to Portland on the other end, so look out for tickets at The Hollywood Theatre website in a couple months.
