Opened in 1972, Le Sahel quickly became Dakar’s premier nightclub. Led by the house band, named after the nightclub, the club swung to a mixture of a little soul and a lot of salsa. Legends including Johnny Pacheco and Celia Cruz came to Dakar and shared the stage with the Sahel big band. Primarily a live group, the group released only one album. To preserve their musical and magical history, the key musicians reunited in 2015 for an album that revives the repertoire of yesteryear. Expect tight African salsa, with an especially rich wind section, that keeps swinging irresistibly throughout the album.
